In the upcoming fifth round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, the Colombian National Team faces a formidable opponent in Brazil. Despite Brazil’s recent struggles, having not achieved desired results, they have never lost to a Colombian team in the qualifying stages. This match holds immense importance for Nstor Lorenzo’s team, as they cannot afford to drop more points in Barranquilla. The pressure is on to secure a victory against the ‘la Verdeamarela’ team, especially after Brazil’s unexpected draw with Venezuela and a tough defeat against Uruguay.
Furthermore, Colombia may find an advantage in the absence of key players such as goalkeeper Ederson Moraes, midfielder Carlos Casemiro, and attackers Neymar Jr, Gabriel Jesus, and Richarlison. This presents an ideal opportunity for Colombia to make history by delivering a flawless performance and displaying more attacking prowess.

How the Conmebol Qualifier for the 2026 World Cup is Determined
With FIFA’s decision to increase the number of participating countries from 32 to 48, there have been changes in the allocation of qualification spots for Conmebol. The ten countries in South America will now have more opportunities to secure a place in the World Cup.
The qualification process involves six direct spots and one playoff spot. The teams will compete in a league-style phase, playing home and away matches against each other. The matches will commence in September 2023 and conclude in October 2025.
The top six teams in the standings will earn direct qualification, while the seventh-placed team will enter a playoff to secure a spot among the 48 qualified teams. This format allows for more teams to have a chance at direct qualification, with only three teams being eliminated after the 18 scheduled matches. The seventh-placed team also has the opportunity to secure qualification through a playoff against a team from another confederation.
