Chungbuk Sports Championships: Chungju Clinches Overall Title in Three-Day Showdown
The city of Chungju played host to the 64th Chungbuk Provincial Sports Competition, an annual event that brings together athletes from 11 different cities and counties in the region. The three-day thermal war ended on the 10th, with the city clinching the overall championship. More than 5,000 athletes participated in 26 different sports, under the slogan ‘Chungbuk-do People in Chungju’.
The Road to Victory
Chungju’s path to the overall championship was built on strong performances across various sports. The city squad secured three consecutive wins and dominated traditional events like table tennis, judo, and badminton. Another significant contributing factor was the city’s strong showing in sports like bowling and ground golf, which demonstrated exceptional power within the province. Even in soft tennis, where Chungju had been previously weak, they managed to achieve second place.
Other Highlights and Awards
- Cheongju City took home the comprehensive championship in the student division.
- Jecheon -si and Eumseong -gun won in harmony, while Yeongdong -gun and Jeungpyeong -gun received orders, and Boeun -gun and Goesan -gun were friendly.
- The Chungbuk -do Gate Ball Association and the Chungbuk -do Judo Association were recognized for their excellence as the best events.
An Impressive Showcase
The 64th Chungbuk Provincial Sports Competition was not just about the sports; it was also a celebration of the city’s spirit and culture. The opening ceremony, held on the 8th, saw an unprecedented 25,000 visitors, demonstrating the enormous interest and support from the Chungju citizens. The event featured a unique citizen’s competition, where the city’s inhabitants took center stage, and a fresh torch lighting ceremony that used the ‘fairy’ of the children’s forest.
“It has become a venue for 1.65 million Chungbuk citizens’ harmony like the slogan of this competition,” said Chungju Mayor Cho Gil-hyung.

The next installment of the Chungbuk Provincial Sports Competition will be held in Eumseong-gun in 2023. Until then, Chungju can rightfully celebrate its unforgettable victory and the city’s impressive display of unity and sportsmanship.
