Last French Badminton Ace Standing: Christo Popov Fights for Quarter-Final Spot in Rennes
French Hope Hinges on Popov’s Shoulders
In the French Open at the Glaz Arena in Rennes-Cesson, all eyes are on Christo Popov, the sole remaining French representative in the singles category. Popov, seeded 8th, is set to clash against Taipei’s Chi Yu Jen, the world’s 28th-ranked player, in the quarter-finals on Friday.
Popov’s Path to the Quarter-Finals
Popov’s journey to this stage has been nothing short of impressive. He began by outclassing world no. 12 Lin Chun-Yi in the first round, winning 21-11, 21-19. Then, in the round of 16, he dominated Lee Chia Hao, winning 21-14, 21-16. This victory was particularly sweet as it avenged his brother Toma Junior’s first-round exit at the hands of the same opponent.
I have always won against this opponent, so obviously it’s a big positive point to have continued this series. Plus, I play at home so there is no stress but only motivation. Even when I’m behind in the score, I still have this energy. So that helps a lot. […] I approached the match quite calmly and I was able to play my badminton normally. I knew I could cause him a lot of trouble and win this match.– Christo Popov
Disappointment for Alex Lanier
Contrary to Popov’s success, Alex Lanier, France’s top-ranked men’s singles player, suffered an early exit. Despite his 7th world ranking, Lanier lost to Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan in the first round, 15-21, 16-21. Lingering fatigue from his Danish Open semi-final appearance last week might have been a factor.
No French Women in Main Draw
Unfortunately, no French women made it to the main draw, with the highest-ranked player, Anna Tatranova (97th), failing to qualify.
