Christo Popov: From 31st to 8th in the World, Now Fighting for French Open Glory

Unstoppable Popov: A Quarter-final Streak

Christophe “Christo” Popov, the 23-year-old French badminton sensation, hasn’t been taking return tickets to his hometown lately. His IFB (International Future Badminton) tournament streak has seen him reach the quarter-finals an astonishing ten times in his last thirteen competitions, with a record of seven semi-finals.

“Now, when we lose in the second round, or even in the quarters, we’re very frustrated,” Popov admitted with a laugh. “And honestly, we don’t even take return tickets anymore. I’ve been traveling straight from tournament to tournament since I left for Finland. I’m in a good rhythm!”

Rise to the Top: 31st to 8th in Six Months

Once struggling at the start of 2025, Popov has since transformed into the best version of his young career. Kicking off with a disappointing first-round exit at the All England in March, he has since climbed from 31st to 8th in the world rankings.

Popov’s tactical prowess and athletic completeness have been on full display this week in Cesson-Sévigné, where he’s thriving on home turf. “We play at home, there’s no stress, only motivation,” he smiled.

French Open Semi-finals: Next Challenge for the Rising Star

How far can he go? Popov is brimming with confidence heading into the semis. After dispatching three Taiwanese opponents en route, his next challenge is Thai world vice-champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn.

“It’s going to be a big game, that’s for sure,” Popov said. “I’ll give 100% on the pitch … It’s going to be a very, very big fight. We’ll have to look for this big challenge.”
