Eubank Jr vs Benn Final Press Conference: Trash Talk, Drama, and Hope for Saturday Showdown
Eubank Jr takes control, dismisses Benn’s promoters
The final press conference for the highly anticipated boxing match between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn ended in a clash of personalities on Thursday night, setting the stage for Saturday’s showdown at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“If I’m not letting Eddie speak, then there is no way you are getting a chance,” said Eubank Jr with disarming nonchalance, dismissing Eddie Hearn, Benn’s promoter, who soon retreated from the stage.
Eubank Jr alleges Benn fled the UK, promises victory
Eubank Jr, 35, then turned his attention to Saturday night’s fight and his bitter rival. “I know what is coming,” he said. “I prepared my whole life for these moments. I’ve put the time in, dedicated decades to this sport and have done it without cheating or cutting any corners.”
Eubank Jr goaded Benn about the two positive drug test results he recorded, forcing the cancellation of their first fight in October 2022. “There is a reason why he had his training camp in Spain,” said Eubank Jr. “He had to flee this country… He took himself away and thinks he can use me to get back into the good graces [of the public].”
Benn unfazed, promises a fight
Benn, 28, responded to Eubank Jr’s accusations with restraint. “I’m not going to lower myself to Chris and go back and forth,” he said. “I’m excited to go back in there and put my hands on him on Saturday. We’re not at school now. I don’t need to call him names.”
Eubank Jr shares personal pain, promises victory
Eubank Jr then spoke of his personal hardships, using them to underscore his determination to beat Benn. “What is pain, though?” he asked. “I have a 31-year-old brother who is buried in the desert in Dubai – that is pain… My own father, a man I idolised for my entire life, doesn’t speak to me… These things are what pain is to me.” He promised to be far more determined to beat Benn than he was before Benn’s positive drug tests.
Face-off sets stage for Saturday’s showdown
Two months ago, at an earlier press conference, Eubank Jr smashed an egg against Benn’s cheek, a reference to his rival’s positive drug test results. This time, just over 48 hours before they meet in the ring, they engaged in a face-off at a safe distance, holding each other’s gaze for a long time before disappearing into the darkness, setting the stage for Saturday’s showdown.
