Chandimal’s century, Kamindu’s world record, Sri Lanka on the first day

In the second Test against New Zealand, Sri Lanka took the lead on the first day. Dinesh Chandimal’s century, Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis’ half-centuries, they ended the first day by scoring 306 runs in 90 overs for the loss of 3 wickets. Chandimal was dismissed for 116 runs but Mathews 78 and Kamindu remained unbeaten on 51 runs.

Chandimal’s century is the 16th of his career and sixth in wickets. Meanwhile, Kamindu has set a world record for the most consecutive Test fifties after his debut by scoring a fifty. Left behind Pakistan’s Saud Shakeel. Kamindu played fifty innings in eight consecutive Tests. Shakeel had seven.

Sri Lanka won the toss and went into bat. The start was not good. In the last ball of the first over, Pathum Nishanka took a catch behind the wicket while punching the ball from Tim Southee. However, Dimuth Karunaratne’s second wicket partnership with Chandimal did not allow the hosts to face any further danger.

Chandimal-Karunaratne separated after taking the team’s runs to three figures. Karuna’s innings ended with a runout (46 off 109 balls). After breaking the pair of 122 runs, Chandimal-Mathews kept the wheel of runs going. The two added 97 runs. Chandimal stopped playing an innings of 116 runs off 208 balls with 15 fours. Mathews and Kamindu then spent the rest of the day inseparable.
