[이코노미스트 이병희 기자] LX Group announced on the 17th that the ‘2024 LX Korea Women’s Baseball Tournament’ will open on the 19th.
The LX Cup Korea Women’s Baseball Tournament is the only national women’s baseball tournament in Korea sponsored by a company. LG Electronics started the ‘LG Cup Korea Women’s Baseball Tournament’ in 2012, and after LX Group became independent from LG Group, it sponsored and established a new event starting in 2022.
This tournament is jointly hosted and hosted by LX Group and the Women’s Baseball Association of Korea (WBAK). A total of 41 teams and over 1,000 players will participate at LG Champions Park, Stadium of Dreams in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do. It will be played on weekends over two weeks. It is a tournament format in which 16 teams from the Champ League (upper league) and 25 teams from the Future League (lower league) participate.
Anyone can watch all games for free. The Champions League opening match (19th) and final (27th) will be broadcast live on YouTube.
There is an interpretation that the background to LX Group’s sponsorship is LX Group Chairman Koo Bon-joon’s ‘love of baseball’. Chairman Koo is known to have a special interest in baseball, having previously served as the owner of the LG Twins. Unlike other women’s baseball tournaments, the LX Cup Korea Women’s Baseball Tournament is evaluated to be held at a professional stadium because of the large scale of sponsorship.
An official from LX Holdings said, “We hope that this will be an opportunity for all participating players to showcase their high skills,” and “We hope that this will be an opportunity for Korean women’s baseball to expand its base and develop through the public’s interest and love.” He said.
