Olympic Glory and World Domination
Marín achieved unprecedented success in the sport, becoming the first non-Asian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in women’s singles badminton at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. She defeated India’s PV Sindhu in the final to claim the historic victory.
Beyond the Olympics, Marín secured three World Championship titles in 2014, 2015, and 2018. She likewise boasts an impressive record of seven European Championships between 2014 and 2024.
She held the No. 1 ranking for a record 66 weeks.
Recurring Knee Injuries Force Retirement
Marín’s career has been plagued by knee injuries. She first tore the ACL in her right knee in 2019. She then ruptured the ACL in her left knee, preventing her from defending her Olympic title at the 2021 Tokyo Games.
The injury sustained during the semi-final match at the 2024 Paris Olympics proved to be the final blow. She initially attempted to continue playing with a knee brace, but was ultimately unable to recover sufficiently to compete.
“I would have liked us to meet on the court one last time, but I don’t desire to put my health at risk for that,” Marín said.
