March 16, 2026
Peruvian Player One Step Closer to Masters 1000 Debut
Ignacio Buse is within striking distance of making history, advancing to the final round of qualifying for the Miami Open presented by Itaú. The 63rd-ranked player in the PIF ATP Rankings secured his place with a challenging victory over Tunisia’s Moez Echargui.
Buse overcame Echargui 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4 in a match lasting two hours and 46 minutes. Despite initially controlling the match, Buse faced a resilient opponent in the second set, ultimately prevailing in a decisive third set.
“His status as the first seed in the ‘qualy’ of the Miami Open presented by Itau was in check this Monday. Yet, Ignacio Buse resolved a tangled debut by beating the Tunisian 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4 Moez Echargui and be one more win away from the main draw.” ATP Editorial Board
Key Stats and Performance
Buse demonstrated a strong serving game, connecting 10 aces throughout the match. He broke Echargui’s serve five times, proving crucial in securing the win.
The Peruvian will next face Coleman Wong of Hong Kong, who defeated Jack Pinnington Jones in a three-set match. Buse previously defeated Wong in a 2023 ITF Future event in Gurb.
Potential Milestone for Peruvian Tennis
A victory over Wong would mark Buse’s first appearance in a Masters 1000 main draw. He would become the first Peruvian player to achieve this feat since Juan Pablo Varillas in Shanghai 2023.
Other Notable Qualifying Results
Rafael Jódar too advanced to the final round of qualifying, while Martín Landaluce and Daniel Mérida secured victories for Spain. Thiago Agustín Tirante of Argentina also progressed.
