Black SunZet: Judo Star Jael Wernert Balances Music and Competitive Sport

Vienna, Austria – Jael Wernert, a 19-year-old musician from Korneuburg, is successfully navigating the worlds of punk rock and competitive judo. As a drummer and backing vocalist for the all-female band Black SunZet, and a dedicated athlete, Wernert embodies discipline and passion both on and off the stage.

From Protest Songs to Judo Mats

Black SunZet, founded three years ago by Johanna, Selma, and Jael, is a punk rock band committed to addressing social issues through their music. Their anthem, My Body, My Choice, earned them the top prize at the 2026 FM4-Protestsongcontest. The band’s success stems from a desire to reach people and really craft a difference, according to Wernert.

A Personal Catalyst for Change

The inspiration for My Body, My Choice came from a personal experience witnessed by bandmate Johanna Wimazal. Whereas commuting on the Vienna U-Bahn, Wimazal observed a woman being harassed and noticed the unsettling silence of fellow passengers. This incident sparked a powerful message against violence and a call for greater respect. As Wernert explains, Knowing that a woman dies every ten minutes just because she is a woman, that violence against women is normalized and that in 2026 there will still be no equal opportunities, that makes us angry..

Judo Achievements and Perseverance

Alongside her musical pursuits, Wernert is a rising star in the world of judo. Currently a member of the U21 squad, she has achieved significant success, including a medal at the European Youth Olympic Festivals, a U18 European Championship medal, and a seventh-place finish at the U18 World Cup. Her journey hasn’t been without challenges, as she has overcome two serious knee injuries through dedication and perseverance.

Finding Balance and Inspiring Others

Wernert views judo and music as complementary forces in her life, stating, They’re like my left and right legs. While judo provides a platform for personal growth and self-defense, Black SunZet allows her to advocate for social change. The band experienced the impact of their message firsthand during a concert in Munich, where audience members expressed gratitude for their willingness to address challenging topics. That’s when I realized that our music could really trigger something, Wernert recalls.

Looking Ahead

Following their victory in the protest song contest, Black SunZet is focused on new projects, including their debut album and upcoming concerts. The band remains committed to continue to spread our message against violence and for more respect, according to Wernert.
