Revitalizing Baseball in France: A Hands-on Experience with Caen’s Phenix Club
Baseball, a sport deeply ingrained in the cultures of Cuba, Japan, and the United States, is on a mission to carve a niche for itself in France. With the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games on the horizon, clubs like Caen’s Phenix are determined to breathe life into the sport and cultivate a new generation of enthusiasts.
Breaking Down Barriers in Caen
Due to the winter chill, baseball practice in Caen shifts indoors to the Grace de Dieu gymnasium. Here, Laurent Jacquottin, the newly minted president of Phenix club, welcomed me for a firsthand look at how they’re making baseball accessible to all.
What struck me immediately was the gender balance among trainees – nearly as many girls as boys, a testament to the club’s inclusive spirit. The session began with throwing and catching exercises, focusing on precision, power, and the often-overlooked skill of reception, before moving on to defensive strategies.

The Mental Game of Baseball
As the training progressed, we delved into match situations, emphasizing field positioning and anticipation. This emphasized the mental acuity required in baseball, as Coach Laurent explained, “It’s crucial to know what to do at the right time. Mastering the mental aspect can take you far.“
The physical demands, however, are undeniable. Swift changes of support and precise movements are essential, particularly in throwing and hitting. Astonishingly, I found myself successfully hitting the ball on my first few attempts, unlike professional players who average just three successful hits out of ten.
Reviving Regional Baseball
With a structured approach and regional aspirations, Caen’s Phenix club is striving to reignite local interest in baseball, embodying a unique and formidable presence in Normandy’s sports landscape.
