1-4 triumph for the Blaugranas in Vienna with Kika Nazareth taking center stage
MADRID, 21 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
FC Barcelona defeated St. Pölten 1-4 this Thursday on matchday 4 of Group D in the Women’s Champions League, thanks to a double from Francisca ‘Kika’ Nazareth, a goal from Vicky López and another from Alexia Putellas , thus putting the culés on track for their ticket to the quarterfinals.
On the grass of the Viola Park, in Vienna (Austria), the visitors’ dominance came to fruition with the 0-1 score in the 20th minute, when Kika Nazareth stole the ball from Kamila Dubcová inside the rival area and lined up to shoot from point-blank range with a powerful forehand.
The locals suffered that blow and conceded almost consecutively 0-2 and 0-3 at half an hour. Kika Nazareth scored first, turning around to finish off an assist from Esmee Brugts from the left wing inside the area; and later, Vicky López joined the Barcelona party that was coming to Austria.
The young number 19 of Barça Femení scored her first goal in the Champions League after a backheel by Patri Guijarro that no one knew how to clear; Vicky López got ahead of Chiara D’Angelo, dribbled past her and with another close shot beat the local goalkeeper, Carina Schlüter.
After the break, the Blaugrana’s first chance of real danger took a while to arrive, but they advanced to 0-4 (min.57). Aitana Bonmatí combined with Alexia Putellas and she in turn with Kika Nazareth, who returned the ball to Barça’s number 11; Putellas won the back of Anna Johanning, avoided D’Angelo with a subtle touch and executed a left cross.
Putellas’ 200th goal as a first-team Barça player, a record that also gave everyone peace of mind for the final stretch of the duel. The 1-4 scored at will by Valentina Mädl in the 59th minute, after a lateral foul sent low into the Cata Coll area, hardly worried the visitors.
In fact, Pere Romeu’s pupils prowled the fifth goal several times. This was what happened with a header by Ingrid Engen on a set piece in the 89th minute and which the St. Pölten defense cleared on the same goal line; and it also happened on a Sydney Schertenleib volley over the crossbar, already in injury time.
Even the last action was a culé attack, settled with a low shot from Nazareth from the side inside the area, but which Schlüter thwarted with his left foot to prevent the Portuguese striker’s ‘hat-trick’ on a night that with that stopped She would have been unforgettable.
However, Barça secured the victory without any problem and has now added nine points, reinforcing its second position in a group that Manchester City still leads with 12 points due to its total number of wins. Hammarby is third (3 pts.) and St. Pölten is bottom (0 pts.).
