Teen Equestrian Star Overcomes Injury to Qualify for Badminton

Eighteen-year-classic Maddie McGregor is preparing to compete in the BE90 class at the LeMieux Grassroots Championships at Badminton, showcasing an inspiring story of resilience, and determination.

A Lifelong Partnership

For Maddie, her pony, Kilshrewley Lady – affectionately known as Kitty – is more than just a competition partner; she’s horse of a lifetime. Maddie explains, I’ve had Kitty for eight years now, and she has taught me everything I know about the sport. Kitty is described as very opinionated and quirky, but deeply loved for her unique personality and leadership within the stable.

Bitless Jumping and Unique Training

What sets this partnership apart is Kitty’s competition style. She will be competing in the jumping phases completely bitless, utilizing a Sidepull bridle. Maddie describes the bridle as essentially a cavesson noseband with ring attachments for the reins, explaining they’ve found it’s what makes Kitty happiest.

Training for Maddie and Kitty isn’t conventional. Based in Scotland, they maximize their surroundings, often training on the beach. It’s not ideal, but it does make for some very scenic videos! Maddie notes.

A Remarkable Comeback

Their journey hasn’t been without significant challenges. Last February, Maddie suffered a broken vertebra in a fall from another horse. The experience profoundly impacted their partnership. I only felt safe on Kitty for a while after that, Maddie recalls. That’s how I came to event her last year. It’s been a process, but she gave me the confidence to get back in the saddle and keep going. Maddie earned a bronze medal at the International Youth Eventing Championships just months after the injury, becoming the highest-placed Scottish competitor.

Dedication to Fitness and Wellbeing

Maddie prioritizes both her own fitness and Kitty’s wellbeing. Recognizing the height difference – Maddie is nearly 6ft tall while Kitty stands at 15hh – she’s committed to staying strong and balanced. I’ve taken up running this year so I can be fit enough for her, she says. Being strong helps make it as easy as possible for Kitty – she’s little, but she’s got such a considerable heart!

Qualifying for Badminton

Last year, Maddie and Kitty qualified for the Grassroots Championships after achieving a second-place finish at the regional championships in Forgandenny. We just missed out on first due to the fact that of speeding penalties, but it was a huge achievement for us, Maddie reflects.

Looking Ahead

This year, their preparation has focused on dressage, with a ramping up of jumping work as they approach their first event of the season at Kirriemuir. Maddie expresses her excitement for the championships, stating, This is an opportunity to show everyone how amazing Kitty is and how deserving she is of her place there.

For Maddie and Kitty, the journey to Badminton represents more than just competition; it’s a testament to resilience, creativity, and the extraordinary bond between a rider and her pony.
