Avalanche Bolster Roster with Key Trades Ahead of Deadline
The Colorado Avalanche have made significant moves to strengthen their roster ahead of the NHL trade deadline, acquiring forward Nicolas Roy from the Toronto Maple Leafs and defenseman Nick Blankenburg from the Nashville Predators.
Adding Depth Up the Middle
The Avalanche acquired Nicolas Roy from the Maple Leafs on Thursday in exchange for a conditional first-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The first-round pick is contingent on the Avalanche’s performance in the 2027 draft; if it falls outside the top 10, Colorado will send its unprotected 2028 first-round pick to Toronto.
Colorado GM Chris MacFarland said,
Nic Roy is a big, right-handed centerman that can play wing. [Coach Jared Bednar] can use him in a lot of different ways. He’s a big body. We’re obviously exceptionally familiar with him specifically from his days in Vegas when we butted heads with them. He gives the coaching staff a lot of different matchup scenarios that allows [Bednar] to play whether it’s [Kadri] in the middle, [Kadri] on the wing, Nic Roy on the wing, in the middle. You just can’t have enough centermen and defensemen as well.
Roy, 29, has 20 points (five goals, 15 assists) in 59 games this season. He has one year remaining on his contract with an average annual value of $3 million and will turn into an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season.
Versatility on Defense
Prior to acquiring Roy, the Avalanche added defenseman Nick Blankenburg from the Nashville Predators on Wednesday, trading a fifth-round pick in the 2027 draft in return.
MacFarland also stated,
We feel like the addition of the two guys is, we’re very skilled in the middle of the ice and they also can all check and check real well. We consider it makes us harder to play against in any type of game, so we’re super excited to have both of them in the mix here today.”
The Avalanche currently hold the best record in the NHL at 41-10-9.
Other Moves Around the League
Elsewhere in the league, the Calgary Flames acquired forward Ryan Strome from the Anaheim Ducks for a seventh-round pick in the 2027 draft. Strome, 32, has nine points (three goals, six assists) in 33 games this season and is in the final year of a five-year contract.
The Flames also added forward Brennan Othmann from the New York Rangers in exchange for forward prospect Jacob Battaglia. Othmann, 23, has one goal in 17 games this season.
