Australian Open: Reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka and Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qianwen advanced to the second round of women’s singles at the Australian Open tennis tournament. Due to rain on the first day of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, many matches could not be played as only a few matches could be organized in the indoor facility. In the men’s category, second seed Alexander Zverev entered the next round by defeating Lucas Pouille 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the final match of the day.
Sabalenka defeats Stephens
Two-time champion Sabalenka made a great start to her campaign for her third consecutive title with a 6-3, 6-2 win over US Open 2017 winner Sloane Stephens. Fifth seed Zheng defeated 20-year-old qualifier Anca Todoni of Romania 7-6 (3), 6-1 in her first match played under the roof on the main court of Melbourne Park after losing to Sabalenka in the final last year.

Kei Nishikori escaped defeat
17-year-old Mira Andreeva was the first player to make it to the second round. She defeated Marie Bouzkova in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the match played under the roof at John Cain Arena. Out of the first three matches played in the men’s category, two matches lasted five sets. US Open 2014 runner-up Kei Nishikori came back after saving two match points in the third set to defeat qualifier Thiago Monteiro 4-6, 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-3, 6-3, while sixth seed Casper Ruud defeated Jaum Munar 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.

These players also got victory
In another match in the men’s category, 20th seeded Arthur Fils defeated Otto Virtanen of Finland 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-4. Linda Noskova was the first seeded player to be eliminated in the initial round. She lost to 29th seeded player Clara Towson 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. In the women’s category, the seeded players who made it to the second round also include Paula Badosa, Donna Vekich and Leyla Fernandez.
