Twenty-year-old Californian Alex Michelsen upset 19th seed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday.
This will be the first time there has been a fourth round of the major tournament for Michelsen, the 42nd in the world.
The American earned his second win in less than a week against a top 20 player.
Michelsen began his stay in Melbourne by defeating 12th-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas in four rounds.
Tsitsipas was defeated in the final of the tournament in 2023.
Michelsen’s next opponent will be number 8 Alex de Minaur, the local favourite, or Francisco Cerundolo, 31st in the world.
Michelsen’s coach is Robby Ginepri, a finalist at the 2005 US Open.
Against Khachanov, Michelsen was four for four on break opportunities, in addition to collecting 39 winners.
“I played amazing in many matches,” said the tennis player from Aliso Viejo, a suburb of Los Angeles.
“I cannot really explain what is happening. I’ve never had such a good lead. »
