Putting up a much better showing than their previous encounter, Felix Auger-Aliassime pushed reigning champion Jannik Sinner to the limit in a four-set thriller on Friday, demonstrating significant improvement and intent to challenge the tour’s elite.

From a Lopsided Defeat to a Competitive Rematch

Just a few weeks after a 6-0, 6-2 drubbing at the hands of Sinner in Cincinnati, Auger-Aliassime turned the tables considerably, taking the Italian to a deciding set before falling 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Canadian’s resurgence in form has been remarkable, knocking out top seeds Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, and Alex de Minaur en route to the semi-finals.

“I played much better, served much better,” said Auger-Aliassime. “I knew what to expect this time.”

I went down quickly [in Cincinnati], it caught me off guard a little bit. Tonight, I had much more belief that as the match would go on, I would find a good level and be competitive.

A Tale of Resilience and Belief

Showing remarkable resolve, Auger-Aliassime rebounded from dropping the first set to take the second, conceding just one point on serve. He matched Sinner’s power and displayed impressive forecourt skills, winning 22 of 31 net points. Despite failing to convert several break chances, Auger-Aliassime’s performance was a testament to his growth and determination.

“The way I’m serving, the way I hit the forehand, the backhand too, the movement, and the belief – there’s many things to be pleased about,” he reflected.

Pursuit of the Nitto ATP Finals and Future Rivalries

Surging to 10th in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin during the tournament, Auger-Aliassime is in contention for a spot at the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals. When asked about his emergence as a potential rival to Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, he diplomatically responded, “Future will tell. I don’t want to make too many predictions.”

“We were fighting out there. I was going toe to toe at times, some sets dominating. Of course, I feel competitive, but the future will tell how close I am,” Auger-Aliassime added.

What’s Next for Auger-Aliassime?

With his wedding to Nina Ghaibi in Morocco approaching, Auger-Aliassime has yet to decide on his Davis Cup participation. But before that, he’ll need to find time for a fitting with his wedding suit, humorously noting, “No, I was on court, man. You expect that I was on the phone call, like, immediately after the loss and figuring that out. No, I’ll figure it out tomorrow.”
