International Preparation in Oviedo
The Club Bádminton Oviedo recently welcomed teams from France and Singapore for a mixed-format friendly competition featuring nine matches – singles, doubles, and mixed doubles – serving as crucial preparation for the upcoming Internacional de España tournament.
David Gómez Casanovas, president of the federation, explained that such activities are standard practice before major international events.
The Friday begins the Internacional de España and many selections capture advantage to do a stage of preparation. They arrive a few days before, train together, share points of view and acclimatize to the pavilion.
he stated.
A Valuable Opportunity for Young Players
Mónica Ospina, of the Club Bádminton Oviedo, emphasized the significance of the competition for developing players.
It is a very special activity for the federation, given that we are going to share the court with athletes of a very, very high level. France comes from being European junior champion just a few months ago and for our players, who are starting to gain international experience, it is a very important opportunity.
The competition provided a chance for Asturian players to test their skills against the reigning European junior champions. Despite acknowledging the difference in experience, players expressed enthusiasm and motivation.
Club History and Commitment to Inclusion
The Club Bádminton Oviedo was established in 1998, evolving from the Club Bádminton TAFAD, founded in 1995. Ángel Rodríguez Arias and Francisco Álvarez Dacal, founders of CB TAFAD, remain involved with the club today. For the past 23 years, the club has focused on promoting and developing badminton within Oviedo.
In 2000, the club demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity by creating a Badminton Sports Section for People with Physical, Sensory, and Psychic Disabilities. The club achieved significant milestones, including ascending to the Primera Nacional in 2006/2007 and ultimately reaching the División de Honor in 2009.
The Club Bádminton Oviedo was crowned Champion of the Primera Nacional in the 2011/2012 season, securing their second promotion to the División de Honor.
Looking Ahead to the Internacional de España
Lucía Soto, a 17-year-old player from the Club Bádminton Oviedo and the Centro de Tecnificación, expressed her excitement about competing in the Internacional de España.
It motivates me a lot because it’s like having a European championship here at home. When foreign players come, it’s very enriching because you don’t play against the same people all the time.
Soto will face an Italian player in the first round.
