Aryna Sabalenka Shines as World Number One in Beijing WTA 1000
Aryna Sabalenka made a remarkable debut as the new world number one in the Beijing WTA 1000, defeating Sofia Kenin (31st) with a convincing score of 6-1 and 6-2 in just over an hour on the court. As the top favorite in the tournament, Sabalenka faces tough competition from her biggest rivals who are also present in China.
A Consistent Journey to the Top
Hailing from Minsk and celebrating her 25th birthday, Aryna Sabalenka has already secured thirteen titles on the WTA Tour. With an impressive record of 50 wins and 11 losses in 2023, her standout achievement so far has been winning the Australian Open. Her consistent performance throughout the year has earned her the top spot at the upcoming WTA Finals in Cancun, where she will face off against the season’s best players including Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and Jessica Pegula.
A Dominant Return to Beijing
After a four-year absence, Sabalenka returned to the Asian tournament in style, leaving no room for doubt against Sofia Kenin. Despite Kenin’s recent success in reaching the semifinals of the WTA 1000 in Guadalajara and the final of the 500 in San Diego, the Belarusian showcased her comfort as the new leader of the women’s tour.
Next Challenge Awaits
In the next round, Aryna Sabalenka will face the winner of the match between Katie Boulter and Magdalena Frech. Meanwhile, on the other side of the draw, Iga Swiatek emerges as the second top contender for the title.
