READING, PA – In a city with a strong Latino presence, Wesley Michel Rosario and Justin Angomás DeCastro are two young men who proudly represent the Dominican community in Reading High School basketball.
Rosario, a grade 11 student, stressed that for him basketball is more than a game. “I represent my country outside my country,” he said. For him, playing at home is an experience. “For me it’s nothing new, it’s just the first home game,” said Rosario, who has been a pillar of the team for the past two years as the official point guard.
On the other hand, for Angomás DeCastro, the debut at home has a different flavor. This is his first game as a first-team player, and excitement is mixed with nervousness. “I’m excited. I’m a little nervous, you know it’s my first game. But with him (Rosario) I’ll be fine because he’s my older brother,” confessed Justin, who saw Wesley as a mentor on and off. the court.
Rosario, for his part, became a source of inspiration for his partner. Throughout his career at Reading High School, Wesley has learned from experienced players, and now he is mentoring younger players. “I won the state championship in 2022-23 and I had a good experience learning from some of my classmates in my freshman year,” commented Rosario. Among those colleagues, Rubén Rodríguez was unique, who became the source of his motivation.
“He always tells me to have fun, focus and play my game and not play anybody else’s game,” Justin said, referring to Wesley. The relationship between the two is that of an older brother and younger brother, with Wesley taking the role of team leader, something that not only benefits him, but the whole group.
