JolinchenKids Program Fosters Mental Wellness in Young Athletes

A growing emphasis on holistic development is seeing a unique program prioritize mental well-being alongside physical health for preschool children. The JolinchenKids program, spearheaded by the AOK, is currently being implemented in a Bremerhaven daycare center, focusing on building resilience and emotional intelligence in young children.

Building Resilience Through Play

The program utilizes a playful approach, introducing concepts of mental wellness through the character of Jolinchen, a friendly dragon. Children aged three to six are actively involved in exercises designed to foster psychological resilience. As one educator explained, “Auf zur Insel Fühl mich gut,” say the 20 children from Bremerhaven’s Große Kirche daycare center in chorus. They jump in the air and continue talking: “We’re having fun, we’re doing well here!” This initial activity sets the stage for a session focused on understanding and nurturing emotional well-being.

Seven Pillars of Mental Strength

The program’s curriculum, developed with input from psychologists like Andrea von Harten, centers around seven key pillars of mental resilience. These include recognizing and expressing feelings, and developing relaxation techniques. According to von Harten, “The first and perhaps most important pillar is bonding and trust with a caregiver.” The daycare center has prioritized this pillar by encouraging children to identify their support networks – family, friends, and the daycare center itself – and visually representing these connections through a collage.

Fostering a Positive Self-Image

JolinchenKids similarly aims to cultivate a positive self-image in young children. Educators emphasize the importance of self-acceptance and recognizing individual talents. A technique called the “warm shower” is used, where children receive positive affirmations from their peers. As described by educators Lucyna Rust and Bianca Eisele, the goal is to help children understand that “I am good the way I am and proud of my talents. And if I’m not that good at something, that’s okay too.” Participation is voluntary, ensuring children feel comfortable and supported.

Creating Safe Spaces

Recognizing the need for quiet reflection, the daycare center has created a designated retreat space for children. This area, equipped with pillows and blankets, provides a safe and unobserved environment for children to withdraw and recharge. Educators have observed that children are actively utilizing this space, demonstrating its value in promoting emotional regulation.

Parental Involvement

The program extends beyond the daycare setting, with plans to involve parents in future JolinchenKids lessons. This will include opportunities for parents to learn and practice relaxation techniques, such as yoga and massage, with their children.
