From Guachupita to Real Madrid: The Inspirational Journey of Andrés Happy
Santo Domingo – In the heart of one of Santo Domingo’s most deprived and dangerous neighborhoods, Guachupita, a young talented basketball player, Andrés Happy, was born. Today, he is the base of the European powerhouse, Real Madrid. His incredible journey from survival to stardom is one of the most inspiring stories in sports.
Growing Up in Guachupita
Guachupita, Happy remarks, “is the neighborhood that saw me born and saw me grow. It has stained her image for bad things but there is also a lot of good people. And great athletes have come out. Today is the neighborhood that produces more players for Dominican basketball.”
It was hard because I had to live all those bad things, drug situations, weapons, some shooting …
Despite the challenges, basketball was his escape. “Thanks to basketball I was always on the court, away from all that. It served to dodge not only rivals on the track but also the threats in the street.”
Home Life and Family Dreams
Life at home wasn’t easy either. “We had cuts of water and light,” Happy remembers. “Nowadays the cuts are still. It was difficult, but I had to live that to continue forward and fight to be in better conditions.” Despite the struggles, his father nurtured a dream for his son, “Yes, like every father in my country. Baseball is number one sport in the Dominican Republic. But I didn’t like it.”
The Breaks and Basketball’s Calling
An orange ball, the “Breaks,” was all he needed to ignite his passion. “With that we had to play because there was no other,” Happy laughs. “I have not forgotten that ball or my neighborhood. Guachupita lives in me.”
Adapting to Madrid
Arriving at Real Madrid was a significant step up. “Reaching a club like Madrid is different from everything else,” Happy admits. “But I had the patience and mental hardness that everything was going to work out. I trusted myself and that if I kept working on the right line I would be winning.”
Mentors and Inspiration
Facundo Campazzo and Chus Mateo have been pivotal influences in his journey. “He explained how Madrid was, which should be patient,” Happy recalls of Campazzo. “From the beginning [Chus Mateo] deposited a lot of confidence, supported me, encouraged me to continue… He was with me hand in hand and I am very grateful to the people who want to help me.”
Education and Giving Back
A sociology graduate from the University of Illinois, Happy’s aspirations extend beyond the court. “I want to inject positive things, apply what I have learned in college,” he says. “Today’s society feeds a lot about technology but the main ones cannot be lost, values. Education comes from home.”
Moving Forward with ‘El Tigre’
Nicknamed ‘El Tigre’ by Joel Parra during his time at Joventut, Happy embodies the spirit of his moniker. “If you don’t have the mentality, you sink,” he warns. “I am prepared for when my name is said.” This Sunday, Happy and Real Madrid begin their campaign against Gran Canaria (12.30, Dazn) in the Movistar Arena.
