With the aim of strengthening the rights of people with disabilities, MedellĂn has launched a service that facilitates the recognition of their legal capacity and promotes their autonomy. The tool includes personalized interviews to identify the support needs of each person and guarantee their right to decide for themselves, in line with Law 1996 of 2019, which prohibits interdiction processes.

This service focuses on assessing how people with disabilities express their will and what support they require to make legal and personal decisions. According to Camilo Velásquez, technical director of the Disability Team, this initiative ensures that people with disabilities, with appropriate support, can have control over their lives and decisions.

Between August and December 2024, 64 citizens with multiple, psychosocial, cognitive and physical disabilities have accessed this benefit, demonstrating the positive impact of this tool.

How to access the service

Interested persons can go in person to the Disability Team office in Belén Las Playas, communicate through the available telephone extensions, or write to the email [email protected].
