Danish Badminton Star Amalie Magelund Announces Pregnancy, Takes Break From Competition

Roskilde, Denmark – March 23, 2026 – National team player Amalie Magelund is pregnant and will be taking a break from international badminton competition. The 25-year-vintage, who recently achieved a career high in mixed doubles rankings, is looking forward to starting a family with partner Mathias Thyrri.

A New Chapter Begins

Amalie Magelund, a regular in the Danish mixed doubles elite, is preparing for a new chapter in her life. Mathias and I are insanely happy that we are going to be parents, and are really looking forward to the time ahead. It will certainly be exciting, hard and challenging, Magelund stated.

Magelund intends to remain active during her pregnancy and postpartum period, with plans to return to the highest level of badminton after giving birth. During the pregnancy and after the birth, I will endeavor to keep active – both with badminton and strength training, due to the fact that my intention is definitely to get back to badminton at the very highest level after the birth, she added.

Inspiring Future Generations

Magelund also expressed a desire to inspire other female badminton players in Denmark. For me, it is also important to be able to display other women in Danish badminton that it is possible to have a child during one’s career and then come back to the sport afterwards.

Support From Badminton Denmark

Elite and sports manager Jens Meibom offered his congratulations.

First of all, congratulations to Amalie. This is great news, and we wish her all the best in the future. We are happy on her behalf, and are happy that she has a desire to return to elite badminton when she is ready for it again – we would very much like to see that.

Impact on Partnerships

Magelund will compete in the European Championships in Spain from April 6th to 12th before taking her leave. Her current mixed doubles partner, Jesper Toft, will need to find a new partner for future competitions. William Boe and Andreas Søndergaard are also seeking new partnerships after agreeing to complete their collaboration.
