The Treviso Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened a case for very serious negligent injuries, with no suspects at the moment, for the cycling accident in Vittorio Veneto that involved the 19-year-old cyclist from Trentino Alice Toniolli crashing into a wall, after a fall last August 14. The magistrate is also evaluating whether to classify the accident as an accident at work, given that the athlete had a professional contract as an Under23 cyclist.

The terrible fall occurred during the Open Women’s race at the Circuito dell’Assunta in Ceneda di Vittorio Veneto. Alice Toniolli, born in 2005, was competing for the Top Girls Fassa Bortolo when, shortly after halfway through the race, she lost control of her bike and crashed into the wall of a small bridge, violently hitting her head. She was rushed to the Ca’ Foncello hospital in Treviso, where she is still in a pharmacological coma, and had suffered multiple head injuries, fractures to her ribs and a leg, and a slight cervical contusion. The dangerousness of the stretch was reported by the local police to the race organizers the day before the race. According to the police, protections should have been used to cover the wall where Toniolli crashed, which was not done. Now it will be up to the Treviso Public Prosecutor’s Office to clarify the situation.
