At 48, Kerala’s Joby Mathew has an impressive personality, a body builder’s physique. He’s a trailblazer in para powerlifting

Born with underdeveloped legs, Mathew has already made a significant impact in the sporting arena, securing four gold and one bronze medal for India at the international level. In the Khelo India Para Games 2025, Joby won the gold medal in the 65 kg category. He is wants to win a gold medal for India at the Los Angeles (LA) 2028 Paralympics where he will be 51 years old.

Physical Challenges for Success

A highly technical sport, Powerlifting demands enormous physical stamina, resilience, and mental fortitude. For Joby, these qualities are amplified by his physical limitations. Diagnosed with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency, a congenital disorder where the upper part of the femur bone is either deformed or absent, he never let this feat to impede him.

Jobby started to achieve those goals and outside what he already has. Since 2010, he’s not just a para-powerlifter. Within months of entering, he dominated the sport, winning not one, but four medals during his debut at the Panchkula-held National Para Games. His exploits protected him.

Years passed, he’s proved his expertise and command over the game. However, still not allowed to compete at Paris Paralympics.

There is God, and I have complete faith in Him. If I get proper support, I can do it. This is not just about me; it’s about the country.

As a sports role model and mentor, Joby continues to inspire para-athletes worldwide. Known for his discipline, hard work, and unwavering determination, he attributes his success to his unwavering faith and passion for the sport perhaps a result he also worked as a manager at Bharat Petroleum.
