Mahela Jayawardene has been appointed as the head coach of Mumbai Indians after replacing Mark Boucher. This Lankan great will stand in the dugout of Mumbai Indians as the head coach in 2025 IPL.
The five-time champion franchise announced the appointment of Jayawardene as the head coach in a social media post on Sunday (October 13).
However, Jayawardene served as the head coach of Mumbai Indians from 2017 to 2022. Mumbai won the title three times each during that time. He was then given the big responsibility of the franchise. The post was titled ‘Global Head of Performance’. During this time he coached and selected players for Mumbai Indians in IPL, MI Emirates in ILT T20, MI Cape Town in SA20 and MI New York in MLC.
In 2024, Mumbai Indians played under Boucher. However, the performance was excellent. Played 14 matches and won only 4. And the points table was at the bottom.
Jayawardene’s first task after taking over as head coach will be to pick their retained players. The list of which must be submitted by 31 October. For the 2025 IPL, each franchise can spend Rs 120 crore on fielding players. Which is 20 crores more than last season.
Apart from Mumbai Indians, Jayawardene has also managed Southern Braves in The Hundred, Khulna Titans in BPL. Besides, he has also served in the Sri Lankan team at different times. The last one was Sri Lanka team consultant. At that time, the Lankans won the 2022 Asia Cup.
