Indoor Action: A New Stage for Modern Pentathlon

The World Championships in Kaunas have introduced a new stage for modern pentathlon, one under the spotlight and indoors. Athletes like Emma Whitaker, who missed the Paris 2024 contingent by a slim margin, are embracing the change.

“Every era had its beauty,” says Yasser Hefny, a former world champion for Egypt. But even Hefny agrees that the new indoor format, which made its debut at the Budapest World Cup, is a game-changer.

“I’ve enjoyed watching the boys after I finish competing,” Whitaker says. “It’s so nerve-racking and the atmosphere is great. Every era had its beauty, but I think we’re in a good era right now.”

This shift is paying off. Modern pentathlon, once threatened in its Olympic status, is now set to open the LA2028 Games. The sport’s governing body, the UIPM, is rocking the boat and winning new fans.

“I think the team who’s working to improve Pentathlon has done an incredible job taking us from these very long days to a very exciting, complex event that excites people a lot with very short breaks. It’s more appealing for the younger generation,” says Hefny.

From Riding to ‘OCR Ninjas’: A New Era

With riding’s exit from the modern pentathlon lineup, athletes must pivot and learn new skills. Despite the challenges, Whitaker sees the potential in the change.

“It’s a shame that I didn’t get to go with the riding being there for the last time,” Whitaker says. “But we’ve got to move on and adapt and become OCR ninjas.”

The Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) event, introduced in 2021, has brought a new level of spectator engagement. With athletes slogging through mud, climbing ropes, and navigating obstacles, it’s a must-watch event.
