The Önsbach sports club is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its tennis department with a commemorative publication. Long-standing club supporters are also honored. The offering got off to a dream start in the 70s. It was affordable, not elitist.
50 years of tennis were celebrated at the Önsbach sports club’s winter celebration. As a representative of the Baden Tennis and Sports Association, Ole Müller honored three tennis officials:
Volker Lorenz receives the Badge of Merit from the Upper Rhine Tennis District. Youth coach, youth manager and department head Walter Hund is honored with the BTV bronze pin. Founding member Werner Huschka was awarded the rarely awarded Silver Badge of Honor of the Tennis Association and the Medal of Honor of the Baden Sports Association for 50 years as a coach, youth leader, department head and president. At 80 years old, he is the last active team player from the founding years. Now he is looking for a new president to succeed him.
On November 23, 1974, 64 Önsbach residents decided to found a tennis department at the suggestion of Egon Friedrich, the second chairman of the sports club that was formed in 1971 from the TV and the SV. The former footballer Robert Weber became the leader. Thanks to the enormous efforts of many helpers, tennis could be played on two courts as early as May 1975.
There was a huge rush; in 1978 the department already had 135 members, including 29 young people and around 40 non-Önsbachers. Önsbach was a pioneer for “tennis in the countryside”. The membership fees were very cheap. The facility was expanded to include a third space and a fourth in 1978. In the first years there was a celebratory prom.
became master
In 1980, Werner Reimann became department head, followed by Richard Fellner (1983 to 1995). Championships were celebrated, the U18 even became champions of the Upper Rhine district against TC Lörrach in 1994. That was the reward for the care of Eckhard Spiekermann and youth director Werner Huschka. There were ribbon tournaments and tennis camps for children during the holidays. The school-association cooperation still exists today. Festivals were celebrated on the complex with performances by Martin Schütt or the Gälfiaßler.
After the busy Richard Fellner resigned in 1995, things became difficult. Since no successor was found, youth director Werner Huschka also had to take over the management of the department until 2006. The men and men 30 played in the 1st district league for years. The gaming community (TSG) has existed with TC Wagshurst for several years and a friendly community has emerged.
The village tournament has existed since 2014. The TSG teams experience championships, but also relegations. After Huschka was elected president of the entire association in 2016, Walter Hund has taken over the department to this day. In addition to his work on the festival committee and as team captain, Lorenz Volker will take over Werner Huschka’s duties as sports director.
