According to initial reconstructions, the vehicle caught fire after being hit. The work of the firefighters and the counting of the people involved in the clash were difficult
An accident involving a bus which then caught fire causing at least 38 deaths occurred on Saturday 21 December in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais (in the south-east). This is the worst road accident in the South American country since 2007, according to police data cited by the Brazilian press. In the latest official report, police confirmed 38 deaths. Nine people are hospitalized in serious condition. Among those killed there were also the bus driver and at least one child, explained the firefighters, who used a crane to remove the charred bodies.

The bus was traveling on the highway that connects São Paulo (south-east) to Vitória da Conquista, in the state of Bahia (north-east). The federal police specified, in a press release, that according to “preliminary information and traces found on site”, a large block of granite “probably” fell from the bed of a truck traveling in the opposite direction and hit the bus, which immediately caught fire. Another car then hit the rear of the truck and its three occupants were rescued after being seriously injured. “I send my prayers to the families of the more than thirty victims of the Teófilo Otoni accident, Minas Gerais,” wrote President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his social networks. “I pray for the healing of the survivors of this terrible tragedy.”
difficult counting

Firefighters initially said they had put out the flames and found 22 bodies. They then had to revise the death toll upwards after they entered another part of the bus using a crane. A fire department spokesperson told the agency Afp that it is difficult to establish the exact casualty count “due to the state of the bodies”.

According to the World Health Organization’s Road Safety Status Report 2023, Brazil is the third country in the world for the number of road deaths, after India and China. In late November, a bus accident in the state of Alagoas, in the north-east of the country, left 17 dead when the vehicle plunged into a ravine while traveling on a mountain road.
