Lando Norris will start from pole position in the main race for the US Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The Brit from McLaren had a great lap, but then got very lucky. Champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull) was setting record times on his last outing when George Russell (Mercedes) lost control of his car and crashed into the barrier. This prompted yellow flags and qualifying ended.

Carlos Sainz with Ferrari will be third at the start in Austin. Lewis Hamilton suffered a complete failure. The seven-time world champion had problems with the front suspension of his Mercedes, was second to last in the first stage and has to start 18th.
