John Buckley Sports Set to Open New Shop in Cork City
Cork’s running enthusiasts are excited to learn that John Buckley Sports, Ireland’s longest-established specialist running shop, is ready to open a new shop at Camden Wharf, Cork City. The move will see the iconic store trade from its long-standing Mulgrave Road premises to Nos 4/5 Camden Wharf, located near Moxy Hotel on Camden Quay, by the end of the year.
From Rentals to Ownership: A New Chapter
After years of renting, Conor Kavanagh, the director of John Buckley Sports, expressed his delight at purchasing the former Gala shop premises on Camden Wharf. “It’s really been about finding a permanent home that’s our own,” he said, emphasizing the store’s commitment to Cork City’s retail scene.
“We’d prefer to be in charge of our own destiny,” Kavanagh added, highlighting the brand’s confidence in the city centre’s resilience despite the growth of outlet centres. The Camden Wharf premises, brought to market by Declan Hickey of Casey & Kingston with a guide price of €300,000, didn’t quite meet the asking price but will still make way for a vibrant new user in the high-profile location.
A Historic Move for a Local Landmark
The relocation to Camden Wharf will mark the store’s seventh move since it was founded by legendary runner John Buckley in 1981. Starting from Blarney Street, it has gradually migrated closer to the city centre over the decades, with the upcoming move bringing “two sporting legends closer together,” as Kavanagh playfully put it, referencing Christy Ring Bridge.

New Premises, Same Expertise
Although the new shop will be smaller than the current Mulgrave Road premises, John Buckley Sports will maintain its commitment to providing top-notch service and expert advice. The store carries brands such as Asics, Brooks, Hoka, Mizuno, Adidas, New Balance, and Saucony, and offers gait analysis to ensure customers find the perfect fit.
While Nike is no longer stocked due to the brand’s pandemic-related decisions, the knowledgeable staff continues to be the store’s strength. Around 25% of business comes from healthcare professional referrals,.entries with Kavanagh citing the store’s expertise and staff as key to its success.
John Buckley’s Legacy Lives On

Founder John Buckley, an Irish international runner with numerous records and titles to his name, officially retired from the business but continues to support its growth. The upcoming John Buckley Sports 39th Annual Road Race, taking place on May 20, is a testament to his ongoing involvement.
