An operation that is “among the possibilities”, even if “nothing has been decided” Honda clarifiesalready tuning perfectly his silence to that of Nissan: The two groups “are exploring various possibilities for collaboration, to exploit their respective strengths”. In the inevitable game of parties involved, these are the real and first official reactions which trigger the run-up to the operation of the year 2025, i.e. that hypothesis of Honda-Nissan merger which would give birth to the new third largest automotive group in the world for vehicles sold. Within the limits of what is already possible to declare, the rumors originally relaunched by the economic daily Nikkei finally take shape, according to which “the plan under study provides for the creation of a holding companyOf a parent company into which Nissan and Honda will mergewith the signature of a memorandum of understanding expected soonalso including Mitsubishiof which Nissan has a 24% share.” The importance of such an operation is clearly evident. At the current stock prices on the stock exchange, Honda’s value corresponds to approximately 44 billion dollarsthat of Nissan a 10 billionthus leading to a potential merger of even greater scope than that between Fiat Chrysler and PSA, which in 2021 led to the birth of Stellantiswith a value of 52 billion dollars at the time.

Last March 15th, Honda e Nissan they had already announced one collaboration on joint development of a software platform (“software defined Sdv“) intended for next generation vehicles. In the memorandum of understanding the two companies took into consideration the the possibility of extending the partnership in the medium-long term also to other strategic areas, such as batteries and engines for electric vehicles, with the integration of the respective vehicle ranges. Phrases that seemed circumstantial, only to be discovered today the possibility of a much higher integrationdefined as strategic by financial analysts both for its prospects on the US and European markets. In 2023 Honda sold 3.98 million vehicles, Nissan about 3.37 million, bringing a combined total to 7.35 million which would exceed what the group did Hyundai-Kia (7.31 million) and would potentially position the new company in third place among global car manufacturers after the groups Toyota e Volkswagen. Honda has 194,993 employees, Nissan employed 133,580 at the end of last March, with the total which would also bring Toyota close to 384,954 employees in this case.

The after-effects of the alliance

Since per Honda formulas have never existed structural collaboration with other car manufacturers, a very different situation applies Nissanof which over a third of the shares were acquired by Renault in 1999, subsequently rising to 43%. The alliance Nissan-Renault he scored two decades of history automotive, all this up to its de facto resolution, put in black and white on July 26, 2023 with a definitive agreement. The parties will have cross-shareholdings and equal for 15% of their respective companies, with the brand that will transfer 28.4% of Nissan shares to a French trust, while the Japanese company has committed to investing 600 million euros in Ampere, the company created by the Renault group for the development of electric mobility, becoming a strategic investor and occupying a place on the board of directors. After two Nissan stock sales on 13 December 2023 and 28 March 2024, Renault announced on 26 September a third transaction with the intention of selling approximately 5.0% of the capital to Nissan. The question now is only about the name of who will proceed final settlement towards Paris.
