“This physical plant was built in the late 1960s and time has taken its toll on its structure. The roofs have deteriorated and are leaking. Many parts present stability problems due to cracking of walls and sinking of floors. The cafeteria spaces are damaged and the restaurant did not meet the conditions for food preparation,” explained Margarita María Jaramillo Guzmán, rector of INEM.
Since April of last year, in the prioritized structures, work has been carried out to renovate floors and sanitary batteries, cover walls with soundproofing material and replace ceilings with thermoacoustic covers; In addition, stainless steel security doors and windows were installed and facades were improved, among other works.
“Teaching units 5 and 7 are being used 100% with grades five, six, the ‘walking in secondary school’ program and eleven. We will soon receive the kitchenware for the restaurant, which will make it easier for us to provide an am/pm service with prepared foods starting next year. on site. The renovation of block 2 allows us to generate better environments for the arts in all its expressions: graphics, plastics and music, with emphasis on our philharmonic orchestra,” the director explained.
Although the work was completed in August, only last Wednesday, November 21, the consortium in charge delivered the work to the Ministry of Education of Medellín and the Urban Development Company -EDU-, the entity responsible for the execution and supervision of the contract. .

“The intervention in the three blocks represents 30% of our infrastructure. Upon request, the District administration announced that in addition to the renewal of educational infrastructure, this institution will receive an endowment of technological and connectivity tools for the learning of its academic community.

Our purpose is to strengthen it as a ‘Smart School’ that is a benchmark in coverage, academic offerings and educational innovation. We want it to be integrated and accompanied by two great allies of the District, such as the EAFIT University and the San José de Las Vegas School,” explained Anderson García Cano, Administrative and Financial Undersecretary of the Medellín Ministry of Education.
In the 16 months of remodeling the three blocks and adapting the restaurant, 130 jobs were created.
