Mexico’s record holder for the number of matches played, Andres Guardado, has announced his retirement from his professional career.

Guardado retired from the national team in May. On Sunday, Mexican Leon will play a match against Monterrey in the Mexican Championship, which will be the end of the season if they do not qualify for the final stage of the tournament.

“I want to announce my decision to retire from football at the end of this season and end my professional playing career after 19 years. I know that everything did not work out the way we wanted, but I am proud to play for Leon.

We still have a little hope to play in the play-in, hopefully it will happen, but if it doesn’t happen, I will go play my last game on Sunday. “I’m leaving very grateful and very proud of everything I’ve accomplished,” ESPN quoted Guardado as saying.

Guardado has played in World Cups in Germany (2006), South Africa (2010), Brazil (2014), Russia (2018) and Qatar (2022). The footballer has 182 games for the national team of Mexico, where he scored 28 goals. Guardado won the CONCACAF Gold Cup three times as a member of the Mexican team.
