Huelva is emerging as the most likely option to host the European Badminton Championships in 2026. It would be the second time that the Huelva city organizes this prestigious event, after the 2018 edition, which ended with the victory of local athlete Carolina Marín. The three-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist in Rio 2016 recently expressed her desire to say goodbye to her sports career in Huelva, in a continental tournament.
Marín could not participate in the World Cup that Huelva hosted in 2021 due to one of his serious injuries. However, his intention to retire in his hometown has generated great interest and support for Huelva to once again host the European Championship. The possibility of the tournament being held in Huelva in 2026 seems increasingly closer, especially with the support of the authorities and the sports community.
Carlos Longo, vice president of the Spanish Badminton Federation, has shown his willingness for the city to host the event. “If Carolina wants to retire in Huelva in this tournament, we will be at the service of badminton and Carolina so that she can retire as she deserves,” said Longo. With Marín’s recovery on track, expectations are very high that the 2026 Badminton European Championships will be held in Huelva.
