This is a method that has never been seen before. BDMNTN-XL was held in a 10-minute time format per set rather than the 21-point 3-set format of existing badminton competitions. As the team had to win by earning more points within the time limit, the tempo naturally increased and aggressive rallies became the main focus. So, even on the scoreboard, each set did not end with the same score, but the diverse distribution attracted attention.
There are also a variety of game types. Along with the regular men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, and women’s doubles matches, the 3vs3 match attracted great interest. In particular, in the 3vs3 game, 3 points were at stake, providing interest in the possibility of an immediate comeback. Since the ranking is determined by adding up all the points earned in each game, they showed even stronger concentration in games with high stakes, such as 3vs3 matches.
World-class athletes participated in a unique event. Lee Yong-dae, gold medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and Seo Seung-jae, currently ranked fourth in the world, will participate. In addition, several active players, including Olympic medalist Viktor Axelsen (Denmark), who won the men’s singles title for the second time in a row, Hendra Setiawan, and Gracia Polly (Indonesia), participated and changed the history of badminton.
The preliminary round began with 7 people per team divided into 4 teams (Hurricane, Rockets, Lightning, Bleachers). Two games have been played every day since the 31st of last month, and the Bleachers and Hurricanes faced each other in the final game of the preliminary round on the third day of the tournament. As the preliminary round was confirmed, the match between the two teams became more interesting. The second set of men’s doubles with Seo Seung-jae was the highlight. Bleachers’ Seungjae Seo paired up with Sabar Gutama to face Aaron Chia-Teoei. Seo Seung-jae’s unique defensive skills heated up the field. In particular, in the second game, when the game was tied 5-6, cheers exploded as the rally continued without stopping due to Seo Seung-jae’s crazy defense. As if putting down the burden of victory, players from both teams showed tricks such as no-look drop shots, receiving loud applause.
When the Bleachers, led by Seo Seung-jae, took the second set, the Hurricanes designated the third set, played in women’s doubles, as worth two points. The intention was to create a draw at once. The Bleachers were joined by Alexandra Böje and Toiwei, while the Hurricanes were joined by Gloria Wizzaja and Selena Piek. It was a close match leading up to the shuttle showdown. The Hurricanes, who had put two points on the line in the final sudden death, won, immediately tying the set score at 2-2.
Next, the men’s singles match, which Bleachers selected as a two-point set, was held. Kunrabut Vitidsan lived up to expectations and took back two points. The Bleachers scored 4 points on this day alone and tied with the Hurricanes with a total of 15 points.
Coincidentally, the 1st and 2nd places in the preliminaries were determined through the final set, which was a 3vs3 match. Seo Seung-jae took charge of the Bleachers’ first game in a 3vs3 match with 3 points at stake. The 3vs3 match, which was never seen before, was played out on thin ice, with the side showing a rally without mistakes smiling.
Still, for tomorrow’s real-time match, he relaxed a little and injected some wit, drawing applause from the audience. As a result, the Hurricanes took first place in the final preliminary round with 18 points, holding a 3vs3 match. The Bleachers qualified for second place with 15 points and will face the Hurricanes in the finals.
