The tragedy occurred in November 2022 in Montebello Vicentino. Today the first degree sentence against Rieke. The family: “Moderately satisfied, but Davide will not return”

German truck driver Wolfgang Rieke was sentenced to four years in prison, accused of running over and killing former cycling champion Davide Rebellin in November 2022 in Montebello Vicentino. The man had fled from the site of the accident with his truck to Germany, and was then identified and arrested by the Vicenza police. The three-year and 11-month plea deal had been rejected twice before today’s first instance sentence, pronounced in Vicenza. The prosecutor had asked for a 5-year sentence.

His mother Brigida and brother Carlo found the strength to attend the last hearing of the trial in the Court of Vicenza. “We are moderately satisfied with the extent of the sentence inflicted, considering the laws on road homicide – explained Carlo Rebellin through his personal consultant -. The Vicenza Prosecutor’s Office carried out important work, and the accused also served eight months in prison, a very rare event in these circumstances. On the other hand – concluded the brother -, even if they had sentenced him to ten years, the fact is that Davide would not have given him back to us anyway, he would not have gone back”. And this is precisely the only, bitter consideration of mother Brigida, who did not want to go into the merits of the sentence, limiting herself to noting that “unfortunately I have lost my son forever, he is no longer here”.
