The Spaniard gets his first pro win at 23, leaving his breakaway teammates behind on the climb. O’Connor remains leader

Pablo Castrillo won stage twelve of the Vuelta, 137 kilometers starting in Ourense and finishing at the mountain station of Manzaneda. The 23-year-old Spaniard from Kern Pharma was part of the day’s long-distance breakaway and on the final climb he detached his breakaway companions, winning by a wide margin: it was his first success as a professional, and at the finish line he burst into tears. Behind him, Englishman Max Poole (DSM) was just a few seconds behind, with Marc Soler (Spa, Uae) in third place. As for the fight for the red jersey in Madrid, Ben O’Connor remained the leader and there were no significant changes in the general classification: the Australian has a 3’16” advantage over Roglic and 3’58” over Mas.
