Costa Rica Positioned as Strategic Hub for Indian Expansion
Costa Rica is rapidly becoming a focal point for Indian businesses looking to expand their reach into Latin America. Indian officials and Costa Rican leaders are actively deepening their economic relationship, with India viewing Costa Rica as a crucial “hub” for the region.
“India wants and is looking at Latin America. And India is looking at Costa Rica as one of its hubs for the region and It’s an opportunity that we are not going to ignore,” stated Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Trade, Manuel Tovar.
Shared Philosophies: Yoga and ‘Pura Vida’
The burgeoning relationship isn’t solely based on economic opportunity. Ambassador of India, Sumit Seth, highlighted a surprising convergence in philosophies between the two nations. He noted the similarities between the Indian practice of yoga and the Costa Rican concept of “Pura Vida.”
“The principle of yoga is the union of body, mind, and soul. Pura Vida is as well a concept of how to live at a high level, so yoga and Pura Vida are to have a similarity, different names, but the principles are similar.”
This shared emphasis on holistic well-being is seen as a foundation for stronger cultural and diplomatic ties.
Investment and Growth Across Sectors
Indian investment in Costa Rica is already significant and expanding, though often under the radar. Tovar emphasized the growth across multiple sectors, including manufacturing, services, agribusiness, chemicals, teak, the automotive industry, and even the hospital sector.
“That is, in all economic sectors, India is present in Costa Rica and generates thousands of direct jobs,” Tovar explained.
Costa Rica is committed to facilitating further investment, offering a secure legal framework through its free zone regime and encouraging reinvestment and diversification within the country.
A Vast Market Awaits Costa Rican Businesses
The benefits aren’t one-sided. Ambassador Seth encouraged Costa Rican businesses to tap into the immense Indian market, boasting a population of 1,476 million.
“A Costa Rican company that wants to have a global presence should have a presence in India.”
He also noted that Indian companies are increasingly choosing Costa Rica as their regional center, with activities ranging from computing to automobiles and the chemical industry.
“There are also new companies that seek to do business in Latin America and they are choosing Costa Rica. That is a sign that Costa Rica with its open arms is welcoming and facilitating them with incredibly attractive terms and conditions.”
Accessing Key Markets
Costa Rica’s strategic location provides Indian companies with a platform to reach not only Latin America but also key markets like the United States.
