This latest triumph adds to Battocletti’s impressive collection of medals, including world 5000m and 10,000m medals from Tokyo, and an Olympic 10,000m silver medal from Paris.

The final was a thrilling contest, with the United States’ Emily MacKay surging through to claim the silver medal in 8:58.12. Australia’s Jessica Hull rounded out the podium, securing the bronze in 8:58.18.

Defending champion Freweyni Hailu of Ethiopia faced a challenging race, as her hopes for a repeat victory were dashed by a mid-race fall.
