Published: March 17, 2026
Small Town, Big Dreams
The small community of Paso del Sapo, Chubut province, Argentina, is rapidly gaining recognition as a burgeoning center for badminton. The entire Chubut team competing in the upcoming Patagonian Integration Games will be comprised of players from this single, small town.
Patagonian Integration Games Bound
At the end of April, Paso del Sapo will be represented by both a men’s and women’s team at the Badminton competition of the Patagonian Integration Games, held in Tierra del Fuego province. This achievement highlights the dedication and talent cultivated within the community.
A History of Resilience
Badminton in Chubut province once thrived in Esquel, with the Dumos Club leading the way through figures like Rubén Fernández and Pablo Bonfanti. However, a lack of adequate facilities led to the sport’s decline in Esquel. Despite this setback, badminton persevered, finding a new home in Paso del Sapo.
Local Champions
The women’s team will feature local players Julieta Díaz, a finalist in last year’s Evita National Games, and Sharon Martínez. Asael Krieger has been confirmed for the men’s team, with the second member to be announced soon, also hailing from Paso del Sapo.
Community Support and Development
Chubut Deportes has shown its support by providing the town with essential equipment, including five rackets and four shuttlecocks, to further develop the sport. Currently, approximately 25 boys and girls, aged 7 to 18, participate in badminton training sessions led by Professor Denis Krieger, held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m. In the commune’s gymnasium.
Don’t let anyone share you that it can’t be done. Don’t let anyone tell you not to try it. The conditions under which you work do not matter, but if the objectives are firm and the desire is great, anything is possible.Carlos “el Chavo” Ortiz
A Call for Recognition
Given the remarkable success and dedication within Paso del Sapo, a proposal has been made to the province’s Legislature to officially designate the town as the Provincial Capital of Badminton.
