Vladimir Micov Returns to Basketball as Galatasaray Sporting Director

The basketball world has witnessed a significant shift with Vladimir Micov taking on a new role as the sporting director of Galatasaray. The former Serbian player, after a distinguished career in European basketball, initially stepped away from the sport before returning to the administrative side.

From Valjevo to Istanbul

Micov’s journey back to basketball began with an experience at Metalac Valjevo, setting the stage for a pivotal opportunity. The Turkish club, Galatasaray, extended an offer for him to serve as their new sporting director, a position he previously held a connection to as a player.

Galatasaray’s Offer

“Galatasaray called me at the beginning of December. I was genuinely surprised, even positively shocked. There are still some people in the club who were there when I played here ten years ago. I wasn’t the only candidate,”

Micov stated.

Before accepting the position, Micov consulted with his family, ultimately receiving their full support. He views this as a huge opportunity, recognizing Galatasaray’s stature as a great club with many fans and a great history.

Experience at Metalac Valjevo

Prior to his appointment in Istanbul, Micov gained valuable management experience at Metalac Valjevo, collaborating with Branislav Ratkovica. This experience included fostering a partnership with Partizan to develop young talents such as Shekularac, Danilović, and Miles.

Pozzecco’s Selection

One of Micov’s first key decisions was the selection of a new head coach, Gianmarco Pozzecco.

“I had some names in mind, naturally profiles from the EuroLeague immediately approach to mind. But I thought Pozzecco was the right choice. I understand him and I know what energy he has.

Micov explained.

Micov and Pozzecco maintain a direct line of communication, discussing strategies and approaches to the game.

Basketball Champions League Ambitions

Galatasaray’s primary objective under Micov’s leadership is to Winning the competition – the Basketball Champions League.

Micov actively participates in training sessions, engages with players, and attends matches, leveraging his extensive playing experience in his new managerial role.

NBA Europe and Concerns

Micov likewise shared his thoughts on the proposed NBA Europe project, expressing hope for Galatasaray’s inclusion while voicing concerns about the lack of transparency and the inclusion of teams without a strong basketball tradition.

“everything is being kept hidden and that everything will be revealed in one day. We’re talking about new cities and new clubs without a basketball culture, like England.”

As a supporter of Partizan, Micov closely follows the progress of Serbian teams in the EuroLeague. He praised Red Star’s potential to reach the play-in or play-off stages, while expressing concern over Partizan’s performance following the departure of coach Željko Obradović.

Micov emphasized that a large budget does not guarantee success in modern European basketball, noting that teams with significant financial resources can still struggle to achieve results.
