The United States is moving on to the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic. Italy’s decisive 9-1 win over Mexico on Wednesday at Daikin Park in Houston eliminated Mexico and secured Team USA’s place in the next round.

Had Mexico defeated Italy, particularly in a low-scoring or extra-innings contest, the path to the quarterfinals would have turn into significantly more complex for the Americans.

Italy finished Pool B play with a perfect 4-0 record, earning them the top seed. The United States advances as the runner-up with a 3-1 record and will face Canada in the quarterfinals on Friday at 8 p.m. ET in Houston. Canada won Pool A with a 3-1 record, making Puerto Rico the runner-up.

Italy’s Captain Leads to Victory

Vinnie Pasquantino delivered a historic performance for Italy, hitting three home runs in a single game – a first in World Baseball Classic history.

He started the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning, though the ball just barely made it past the glove of Mexican right fielder Jarren Duran.

Jon Berti followed with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Italy extended their lead when Jac Caglianone scored on a perfect bunt. Jakob Marsee then added a two-run single, giving Italy a 5-0 advantage.

Pasquantino, for good measure, hit two more home runs the rest of the way, finishing with three on the night. Berti drove in a run in the seventh, too.

Mexico managed to score a run in the seventh inning, but the rally proved insufficient to overcome Italy’s substantial lead. Mexico concluded their WBC run with a 2-2 record in Pool B.

Team USA Survives Early Tournament Scare

Italy stunned Team USA on Tuesday with an 8-6 victory, jumping to an 8-0 lead. The Americans needed a favorable outcome from the Italy-Mexico game to secure their advancement.

The Americans had to wait and spot, but Italy’s offensive performance ultimately simplified the situation. Italy finished Pool B with a 4-0 record, while the USA finished 3-1.

Team USA overcame an early setback and remains alive in the World Baseball Classic.
