Thailand Shifts Tourism Focus to “Value Over Volume”

Thailand is strategically evolving its tourism model, moving away from a reliance on mass tourism towards a focus on value over volume. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) presented this updated strategy at ITB Berlin, acknowledging a change in travel behavior. According to the TAT, luxury is increasingly defined by time, peace and personal well-being.

This approach aims to attract new target groups, particularly wellness and well-being travelers. The TAT is highlighting the north of the country, including Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, with offerings for mindful stays such as hiking, yoga, and meditation. Other areas receiving increased focus include Nan with its historic old town, Koh Chang with its quiet beaches, and Phang-nga for gentle adventures and wellness retreats.

Focus on Longer Stays and Community Engagement

Thailand is also encouraging longer stays and travel experiences that more closely involve local communities. The country intends to leverage festivals, cultural events, and congresses to distribute tourism more evenly throughout the year and attract diverse visitor segments.

This new strategy builds upon a successful 2025, which saw 32.9 million international visitors contribute approximately 41.3 billion euros in revenue. The long-distance travel market experienced particularly strong growth, exceeding 10 million travelers for the first time. Germany remains a key European source market, sending approximately 966,000 travelers.

Looking ahead to 2026, Thailand is targeting total tourism-related revenue of around 81 billion euros.
