A Quirky Tradition with Historical Roots

The U.K. Wife Carrying Race is inspired by a 19th-century Finnish legend of gangs who raided villages and abducted women. While the origins are steeped in a somewhat sinister past, the modern event emphasizes lighthearted fun and encourages participants to embrace silly costumes.

The race isn’t limited to traditional couples. Organizers state, You do not have to carry your own wife. It could be someone else’s. Or a mate, girlfriend, boyfriend, sister or brother. They also advise that carriers ideally weigh less than their carried partner.

The Course and the Estonian Hold

Contestants navigate a 416-yard course, complete with obstacles like hay bales and strategically placed buckets of water. The most popular carrying technique is the Estonian Hold, where the carrier supports the “wife” upside down on their back with legs crossed in front of their face.

Touvinen explained their dedication, So I think, ‘OK, next year we’re gonna do better than this, and we take this seriously.’ Their training included weightlifting and practicing the Estonian Hold to ensure Leinonen’s safety and stability.

Leinonen shared her experience during the race, I was afraid that I was going to fall because it was slippery. I just hold tight on my legs and hope for the best.
