The Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH) is set to host the state phase of the 2026 Universiade, from March 16th to 27th. The announcement was made by Gustavo Farías Echenique, Director of University Sports and Sports Infrastructure.

A Diverse Range of Sports to be Featured

The competition will encompass a wide array of sports, including both individual and team events. Athletes will compete in disciplines such as taekwondo, karate, judo, boxing, swimming, chess, and archery. Team sports will include soccer, fast football, basketball, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, and indoor volleyball.

“The Maximum House of Studies is going to be the headquarters of the state stage, which will be from March 16 to 27, different sports will be played, from individual sports such as taekwondo, karate, judo, boxing, swimming, chess, archery, to team sports, where we will also have soccer and fast football, basketball, 3×3 basketball, beach and indoor volleyball.”

Nearly 200 Athletes to Compete

Approximately 200 athletes from the region are expected to participate in this initial stage, vying for qualification to the regional competition. UMSNH officials are optimistic about the potential for success at the national level.

“In the state phase, more than 190 athletes from the Universidad Michoacana will participate in the different sports, both team and individual, and in the men’s and women’s branches, with the goal that we can once again place more than 100 athletes within the National University.”

UMSNH and Atlético Morelia Collaboration

This event builds on the growing partnership between the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo and the Club Atlético Morelia, as highlighted by the creation of Atlético Morelia UMSNH. Gustavo Farías is also recognized as the coach of this collaborative project.
