Medvedev Overcomes Travel Challenges to Secure Indian Wells Victory

Daniil Medvedev has begun his campaign at the Masters 1000 de Indian Wells 2026 with a victory over Alejandro Tabilo, despite a turbulent journey from Dubai impacted by recent global events. The Russian player demonstrated resilience and a positive attitude, downplaying the difficulties he faced.
Travel Disruptions and Limited Preparation
Medvedev’s trip from Dubai was complicated by unforeseen circumstances, requiring him to navigate logistical challenges to arrive in Indian Wells in time for his first-round match. Despite having less preparation time than usual – three days compared to the typical four or five – he felt prepared and confident.
“Normally you have about four or five days to prepare here, if you play well in Dubai, or even in Acapulco. I’ve had three days here, which is not bad. It’s not like I have just one day and I have to play. So three days is not bad. It’s on the limit, because it’s 12 hours away from Dubai and our trip was harder than a direct flight from Dubai to Los Angeles. But, honestly, I felt very good today, which means that the jet lag is gone and I have done a good job, I have slept well and I am looking forward to the next games at 100%, although today I already was.”

Navigating a Difficult Situation
Medvedev shared details of coordinating travel with fellow players Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov, ultimately finding a route through Oman, Istanbul, and finally Los Angeles. He acknowledged the added stress of managing logistics during a complex situation.
“At one point, we were exchanging a lot of messages with Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov, for sure. Andrey and I decided to go to Oman, to strive to find something there. It wasn’t easy to find it, because everyone was trying to exit and there weren’t many flights available. But we managed to find a plane. Karen joined us and the next day we managed to fly to Istanbul and then from Istanbul to Los Angeles. It was longer and a little more stressful than usual in terms of logistics. I passed a lot of time on the phone, which wears you out a lot. As I say, I came here a little more physically tired than usual, but I managed to cope well.”

Reflecting on the Experience
Medvedev expressed a sense of perspective, noting that his focus remained on the tournament despite the surrounding circumstances. He even suggested he might have remained in Dubai if not for his commitment to compete.
“I stayed in one of the hotels where something happened, so we had to evacuate at night with my wife. It’s like, how to say it, I think it depends on the type of person you are and the situation you’re in, so if I was with my kids, I’d probably be more stressed about the situation. The kids weren’t there. They were at home in Monaco. So I thought, ‘Well, the crucial thing now is how to get to Indian Wells.’ To be honest, if it weren’t for tennis, I probably would have stayed in Dubai, because I felt quite safe there. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s what I felt there.”

Match Performance Against Alejandro Tabilo
Medvedev delivered a strong performance against Tabilo, controlling the match from the baseline and minimizing break point opportunities. He acknowledged Tabilo’s capabilities but highlighted his own dominance in the contest.
“I think today was a great match for me. I did everything well. I didn’t have to save any break points, although in some games I had some pressure with my serve. I think I put a lot of pressure on him from the baseline. I feel like I surpassed him. So his only chance was to serve well, which allows you to hold your own in any match in the world. But I managed to return quite well in the important moments, and that was enough to win today. I’m very happy, because Alejandro is a difficult opponent.”

Looking Ahead
Medvedev expressed his fondness for Indian Wells, despite the challenges of adjusting to the time difference and court conditions. He remains optimistic about his prospects in the tournament.
“Yes, Indian Wells is a strange place for me, because especially the first few days the jet lag cannot be greater from Dubai, and I always play in Dubai. So whenever you approach here, there is a 12-hour time difference, and the court is completely different from Dubai. Even the balls feel different, although, for example, this year they are the same, but because of the court. The first two or three days I usually think that there is no chance for me to win the first round. Actually, this year it was a bit different. Then I managed to play well. The last three years were incredible here, with excellent results. So I love coming back here. I love the place itself, not to mention the tennis. I hope for more this year, and today’s match was for the most part very high level.”
