Báez Continues Upset Run at Indian Wells, Defeats Top Seed
Published: March 8, 2026
Indian Wells, CA – Sebastián Báez is making a statement at the BNP Paribas Open, securing a notable victory over Jiří Lehečka, the No. 23 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, with a score of 6-4, 6-1. This win marks Báez’s third against a higher-ranked opponent this year, improving his record to 3-4 in such matches.
Turning the Tide Against Top Competition
Báez previously defeated Ben Shelton (then No. 8) in Auckland and Alejandro Tabilo (then No. 42) in Santiago. This latest triumph solidifies his momentum as he progresses through the tournament.
The Argentine player currently ranks No. 53 in the PIF ATP Rankings and is tied with Jakub Mensik for the most wins on the year, with 14 victories each.
Dominant Performance
Báez’s performance against Lehečka was particularly impressive. He saved three of four break points and converted five break opportunities of his own. He also committed significantly fewer unforced errors than his opponent (19-37).
“When a higher ranked player stood in front of him, Sebastián Báez was unlucky in 2025. In fact, he lost every duel against this type of player last season. But that is changing radically in 2026.”
