McIlroy & European Ryder Cup Team Earn Laureus Award Nominations
The 2025 European Ryder Cup team, led by captain Luke Donald, and Rory McIlroy have both received nominations for honors at the upcoming Laureus World Sports Awards. This recognition follows a stellar year for European golf, culminating in a Ryder Cup victory.
Ryder Cup Team Nominated for Team of the Year
Under captain Luke Donald, the European team reclaimed the Ryder Cup, defeating the USA 16½ – 11½ at the Marco Simone course in Rome. The team’s success has earned them a nomination for the Team of the Year
award at the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards. The ceremony is scheduled to take place in Madrid on April 20.

I had the chance to be part of the miracle team of Medina in 2012, and receive the Laureus Prize of the “Team of the Year” in 2013 was an exceptional moment. McIlroy in the Running for Comeback Player of the Year
Rory McIlroy is also in contention for an individual award, nominated for the Comeback Player of the Year
award. McIlroy’s 2025 season included a Career Grand Slam victory at the Masters, along with wins at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Players Championship, and the Amgen Irish Open. He also secured the Race to Dubai title.
McIlroy will compete against Leah Williamson (England Women’s soccer), Simon Yates and Yulimar Rojas (cyclists and triple jumper respectively), and Amanda Anisimova (tennis) for the award.

Laureus Award Competition
The European Ryder Cup team faces competition from other notable teams, including PSG (Champions League winner) and the Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA champion).
